Anthologies such as this one were also prized by art directors, since the only egos to deal with would be those of the producers, who were mostly not especially focused on the cover image. Record companies had long recognized the value of a striking jacket as a sales tool, though. Those huge wall displays in the stores served as a competitive arena for designers as well as performers. Alas, along came tape, then CDs, and, well, since you have a computer, you know the rest.
