One of the drawbacks to designing and art directing record album covers was the paucity of “something to hang your hat on” conceptually. Most often, you were provided with publicity photos of the act, and just the name of the album, which most often was the title of the first song on the A side. On the other hand, record stores always displayed covers in much the same way that an art gallery might, which served as a great promotion tool for the designer as well as the performer. In this case, luck was on my side. With a title like “Watercolors,” how could you miss?
